The Dutch capital Amsterdam with its world-famous canals is worth a visit at any time of the year. Numerous museums, markets, international restaurants, design shops and cute cafés are within walking distance and a visit is also perfect for a short trip.

There is a lot to discover in Amsterdam in a relatively small area. The area around the Leidseplein is very centrally and beautifully located and offers a few hotels and a lot of restaurants. From there you can walk to the studio in about 5 minutes. The nearest train stations are Vijzelgracht and Rijksmuseum. 

Jordaan and the 9 streets

When the weather is good, you can sit in the café along the Jordaan canals and watch the boats go by.

In the "9 streets" there are many beautiful design shops and small boutiques to explore. The nine streets consist of nine side streets of the Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht and Singel in the center of Amsterdam. Together they form a sub-district with many small and varied shops and restaurants within the larger western canal belt. The development in this area dates back to the first half of the 17th century.

In Amsterdam there are many boats that were originally used in shipping and now, converted for living purposes, they serve as houseboats.

The florally decorated bicycles dotted around the city are the work of an American named Warren Gregory. Known as the "Flower Bike Man", Warren started decorating bikes when his wife, Michelle, couldn't find her bike. She suffers from epilepsy and was therefore often unable to remember the place where she left her bike. To help her, Warren decorated her bike with bright flowers so it couldn't be missed. He then decorated other (abandoned) bikes that he left on her way home so she never got lost again.

On a boat

Canal cruises are available all day. They are particularly worth seeing at night due to the city's illumination. The open-top boats are not always protected against rain, but the visibility is much better and you can hear more. You will find some providers at the Anne Frank House, the trip takes about an hour. Seats do not need to be reserved and you can pay on the boat.

The ferries to A'dam Lookout and NDSM

On the left side behind Amsterdam Central Station you will find the ferries, which are free to use.
The ferry to Amsterdam Noord (Buiksloterweg) takes you to A'dam Lookout with its rooftop swing and a unique view of the city.

The NDSM ferry takes you to the former shipyard of the same name with the street art museum.
The largest flea market in Europe also takes place in the IJ Hallen (in good weather also outside). It usually takes place once a month, on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Museum Quarter

South of the city center, in the adjoining Museum Quarter, you'll find the most famous and largest museums. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the Moco Museum, in which e.g. some works by Banksy can be seen. To visit the museums, however, it is necessary to reserve tickets well in advance.

De Pijp

Southeast of the Museum quarter is the district de Pijp, with many great restaurants and the Albert Cuypmarkt (open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM) , which also sells the well-known, warm Stroopwafel.

But you can also explore the city without planning, there is something to see on every corner within the canal belt.

Amsterdam is full of bicycles, eBikes and scooters. Since the cycle paths run right next to the sidewalks and you can stand on them quickly, you should be careful where you step at all times.
It is also advisable to always have an umbrella with you, as the weather is changeable and it often rains. In many hotels you can simply rent one for the day.

Getting there

Although the city center is passable for cars, there is very little parking. A very good option for parking is the P+R multi-storey car parks, where you can park your car behind the barrier and then take the bus or train to the city with a combined ticket. How to do this is described in more detail on the machine.

However, the journey by public transport is more relaxed. Amsterdam Centraal train station is located in the center of Amsterdam and Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport is also in the immediate vicinity.

You would like to have a tattoo, but you don't know exactly which one suits you? This list should help you to find the right motif for you.

1. Find inspiration in your story

Is there perhaps a specific memory from your childhood or youth that could be the basis for a motif? This can be a landscape from the coastal town where you spent your holidays with your family as a child. It can also be the flower of a plant that you saw on a very special, challenging or beautiful day for you.

2. Get inspiration from animals

Many people get animal tattoos. Animals often have symbolic meanings or have certain properties: bears, for example, stand for strength, endurance, calm and courage, but also balance. A tattoo of or with an animal can remind you of these characteristics and have a positive effect on you. But a portrait of an animal that is special to you is a nice idea and is well suited as a tattoo.

3. Professions, hobbies or sports

A fisherman with a tattoo of an anchor is probably a very common image. The surgeon who has a scalpel tattooed, the librarian who has a book tattooed, or the horse lover who wears a horseshoe as a picture on her skin - everyone has certain objects through sport, hobby or work that are different good to implement as a tattoo.

4. Blossoms, flowers, plants

There are a number of meanings expressed through certain plants. A red rose can represent love and passion, while a white rose can represent loyalty and innocence. The forget-me-not is often used to express family togetherness. Cherry blossoms stand for friendship and joy, but also for beauty. Lavender stands for freedom, but also joie de vivre. There are countless other meanings that can also refer to the origin of the plant or the tattooed person. I have another book tip: Die Sprache der Blumen by Marina Heilmeyer is a great source to get more inspiration. Flowers, blossoms and leaves lead to wonderful floral designs. They can be tattooed as bouquet tattoos, tendrils, floral bracelets or blossoms and are timeless and beautiful.

5. Wanna Dos

Wanna Dos are designs created by a tattoo artist, but not on demand. One advantage is that you can see the motif on the skin long before it is implemented as a tattoo. Corrections are an unpopular topic for tattoo artists, because some corrections to the motif cannot be implemented with a custom design (which the tattoo artist only makes upon your request). With a wanna do you can better assess what to expect. So it's worth it to follow the work of your favorite artist and then react quickly when a new Wanna Do is released.

Whether a wanna do or a custom design, the heart of the artist is in every single piece. A design, whether small or large, takes a lot of work, time and adaptation before it even sees the light of day. 

Of course, an artistic work can and should be used as inspiration. An inspiration means giving an impulse to propose a particular flower, rough idea or placement. But getting inspiration is a completely different thing than copying. 

Taking a foreign design to a tattoo artist to have it implemented as a tattoo is not only punishable for those who want to wear the design on their body, but also for the tattoo artist who implements it. Copying the motifs with the purpose of having them tattooed in another tattoo studio is a criminal act according to § 106 UrhG which can be punished with a fine or imprisonment.

Please also consider whether you would like to be tattooed by someone who is trying to earn money with stolen motifs. Wearing a fake on your skin is especially not a good feeling when asked about it.

Tattoo copiers take advantage of stolen designs from talented artists and pass them off as their own work in order to deliberately deceive their clients. How can you call yourself an artist if you steal from other artists?

Often there is also a lack of knowledge that a motif cannot simply be copied just because it was found on Pinterest, for example. Basically, every work of art is copy-protected without notice and the copyright always lies with the artist.

Pinterest isn't a source of free designs.

Please let artists know if you spot a copied motif anywhere on Instagram, Facebook or other social media - this is the only way artists can try to prevent dubious studios from making money with stolen designs.

On the other hand, I would like to ask you to share this text. For the reason that as many people as possible are protected from getting to copy-tattoo-artists / fake-studios in order to end up in a situation in which they regret their tattoo.

This guide aims to help you get an appointment with your favorite artist. While every artist is different and has different ideas about their work, there are a few things you should consider with all tattoo artists before requesting an appointment with them. This also includes some do's and don'ts to keep in mind if you want to increase your chances of getting one of those coveted appointments with your favorite tattoo artist.

What do you have to do to get an appointment?

Every tattoo artist works differently and makes appointments in their own way. Usually an appointment is announced, where you can then "apply" for an appointment with your favorite artist on a certain day or period: "books open" means that the appointments are made and an appointment is currently possible, "books closed" means that you still have to be patient because the artist cannot make an appointment because he is already fully booked. In this case, it means staying tuned in and following the stories and posts on Instagram.

How do I contact a tattoo artist who is currently making appointments?

Many tattoo artists write on Instagram how they make their appointments and how they would like to be contacted. Messenger often makes it difficult to identify your name, so many artists prefer to be contacted via email or their contact form. 

Is it important to stick to what the tattoo artist recommends?

Absolutely, yes. If you read all the information of the tattoo artist in advance and stick to it, you will have the best chance of getting an appointment. After all, this is a way of showing your respect for the artist and whether getting an appointment is really important to you. If you don't follow the artist's specifications in your request (e.g. leaving important fields in the contact form unanswered), this usually means that you will not receive an appointment.

After submitting your request: The right mix of patience and response time

Once you have sent your request for your desired motif, you have to be patient. In addition to drawing their motifs, tattooing and organizational tasks, popular tattoo artists will take some time to answer all inquiries. 

Updates and information about the current appointment allocation are posted on Instagram and mentioned in stories. Nevertheless, it is usually necessary to respond to an appointment proposal from the tattoo artist relatively quickly so that he can fill his appointment calendar quickly and not so much time elapses between your request and his appointment proposal. You should always keep an eye on your inbox so that you can reply quickly.

You have received an appointment proposal and would like to make an appointment

Congratulations, you have been suggested one of the appointments! Your commitment is required in the following steps, i.e. clarifying final questions and preparing for the appointment.

You have not received an appointment suggestion

Too bad you didn't get a date suggestion. It usually only helps to wait until the next appointment is made and perhaps reformulate your request. There are many reasons for not being able to get an appointment. Not being able to get an appointment is often due to the following reasons:

· Important information is missing, e.g. to the size, approximate position, to the motif. This makes it very difficult for the artist to assess what you really want. 

· the desired style of your desired motif does not match the style of the artist. Every tattoo artist has their own way of drawing and tattooing. You should look at as many pictures and videos of the tattoo artist as possible beforehand. Does your desired motif match the tattoos that have already been done?

· A copy of an artwork is requested (which makes the customer as well as the tattoo artist liable to prosecution by infringing copyrights. Therefore, never have images that you found on Instagram/Pinterest or other sources on the Internet tattooed on you. Real artists don't copy!)

You received an appointment proposal and changed your mind

In this case, it helps the artist a lot if you tell him or her quickly that you cannot accept the appointment. This also shows that good communication with the artist is important to you. For example, if you request appointments several times, but then no longer react to suggested appointments, it is more likely that no appointment will be offered in the future.
